It catches dust and debris coming off old felt, tidies the appearance of the roof space and gives boxes, bedding and suitcases a cleaner environment to sit in. The important part is choosing a material that suits how your roof breathes. Older roofs with bitumen felt behave differently to modern roofs with a breathable underlay, and lining the wrong way can trap moisture rather than manage it. We assess the existing roof build-up before recommending anything. The difference is in the specification and the detailing. ### Breathable membrane A vapour-permeable sheet that lets moisture vapour pass while holding back dust and wind-driven debris. It is the default choice where the roof relies on the underlay to manage moisture rather than on large ventilation gaps alone. ### Foil lining Foil-faced products add a reflective surface and a tidy, bright finish to the roof slope. They are useful where you want the space to feel cleaner and lighter, and are specified where the roof's ventilation strategy allows a low-permeability layer. ### Laps, tension and fixing Sheets are run with the correct overlap and a slight drape rather than pulled drum-tight, so anything that does get past the slates runs down the lining to the eaves instead of pooling on a flat surface. ### Eaves and ridge detailing Lining is stopped so the eaves gap stays open and any ridge ventilation continues to work. This is the detail most DIY lining jobs get wrong, and it is the one that causes condensation. ### Older roofs with no underlay Many pre-war Shropshire roofs were built with slates on battens and nothing behind them.
