The light is positioned to throw across the boarded area rather than into one corner, and the switch is sited so you can turn it on before you climb rather than after. Beyond the standard light and switch we install additional battens for larger decks, plug sockets for chargers, dehumidifiers, Christmas lights or a router, and switching arrangements that make sense for how you use the space. All electrical work is carried out by a fully qualified electrician. Because we do the boarding and the electrics together, cable routes are planned before the deck goes down. Both hands should be on the ladder, and they cannot be if one of them is holding a light. It is a small detail that turns a routine trip into the moment something goes wrong. A dark loft also becomes a dumping ground. If you cannot see the far end, you stop using the far end, and the boarding you paid for holds nothing but the boxes within arm's reach of the hatch. We see 30sqm decks used like 6sqm decks purely because there is no light. Then there are the temporary fixes people live with for years: extension leads run up through the hatch, unearthed lamps clipped to a rafter, junctions taped rather than housed. These are the specifics that decide whether it is a good installation or a future problem. ### 4ft LED battens Linear battens are the right fitting for a loft: they throw light along the deck rather than pooling it in one spot, they run cool, and they are robust enough for a space where things get carried past them. ### Switch position The switch belongs where you reach it before you commit to the climb, usually at the hatch on the landing side, sometimes with a second switch inside the loft for larger spaces. ### Cable routes under boarding Cables are clipped to the sides of joists or run in routes that boarding will not compromise, and never left loose under a deck where a screw could catch them. ### Sockets in the loft A socket makes the space genuinely useful: dehumidifiers in older properties, a router relocated for better coverage, or seasonal lighting. Location and circuit are agreed at survey. ### Insulation clearance Where recessed fittings or extractor housings exist, clearances are maintained so they are not smothered when the insulation is topped up. ### Lighting a loft used for storage vs hobby space A storage loft needs even, bright light so labels can be read and boxes found quickly, usually one or two battens running along the length of the deck. A loft used as a hobby or workshop space needs task lighting at the working position as well, plus sockets nearby, and it is worth deciding which one you have before the cables are run. Retro-fitting a second circuit after the boarding is down means lifting boards you have just paid to have laid. ### Christmas lights, dehumidifiers and seasonal loads The most common reason customers ask for a socket in the loft is seasonal: charging tools, running a small dehumidifier over winter in an older property, or plugging in decorations while sorting them. These are light loads, but they still deserve a fixed, correctly installed socket rather than an extension lead trailing through the hatch and stopping the hatch door from closing on its seal. ### Working with existing wiring Older lofts often contain historic junctions and redundant cabling. Sockets for dehumidifiers, routers, chargers or seasonal lighting are quoted at survey and installed as part of the job. How long does it take?Lighting and switching is done as part of the boarding install rather than as a separate visit, and the timescale is confirmed at survey. Can you light a large boarded loft evenly?Yes, larger decks usually take two or more battens positioned so there are no dark ends. We plan positions against the boarded area at survey. Will the cables be safe under the boarding?They are first-fixed before the deck goes down, clipped on safe routes and kept accessible. Nothing is left where a board screw could reach it. Can you replace an old pull-cord or temporary lighting?Yes, and it is one of the more common things we are asked to sort. Temporary extension-lead lighting in a loft is a genuine fire risk. How long will the LED fittings last?LED battens typically run for many years of intermittent domestic use, and our workmanship is guaranteed for 10 years.
