A top-up brings the whole area back to a consistent modern depth, laid in two directions so the joists themselves are covered rather than left as cold bridges through the ceiling. We handle insulation as part of the loft as a system, not a separate product drop. The material is dressed into the eaves without blocking ventilation paths, kept clear of downlights and cabling, and then covered by raised boarding on LoftLegs so nothing compresses it later. Insulation at half the intended depth does not give you half the benefit in a simple, forgivable way; it means your heating runs longer every single evening through a Shropshire winter, and you pay for that every month whether you notice it or not. Crushed insulation is worse than thin insulation because the compression squeezes out the trapped air that does the actual insulating. This is exactly what happens when boards are screwed flat onto joists over the top of it, which is the most common thing we are called out to correct. There is a moisture angle too. Here is what we assess and specify. ### Depth and layering Insulation is laid between the joists first, then a second layer runs across them at right angles so the timber is covered. That cross layer is what stops the joist line showing as a cold stripe on the ceiling below. ### Why raised boarding changes everything Standard boarding limits you to the depth of the joist, which in most older houses is nowhere near modern insulation depth. LoftLegs at 175mm or 300mm give the insulation room to sit at full depth with an air gap above it. ### Eaves ventilation The gap where the roof meets the wall plate must stay open. We dress insulation up to it without packing it in, so air can move across the underside of the roof and carry moisture away. ### Downlights, fans and cables Recessed lights and extractor housings need clearance, and cables buried under thick insulation should be identified rather than forgotten. We keep them accessible and clear at the time of laying. ### Water tanks and pipework Once the ceiling is well insulated, the loft gets colder, which is exactly why tank sides and pipework need attention. We flag anything that needs lagging at survey rather than leaving you a frozen pipe in January. ### Eaves, edges and the cold perimeter Heat does not leave evenly. It escapes fastest at the gaps: the hatch opening, the eaves where insulation thins out, and anywhere that has been walked flat over the years. Bringing the middle of the loft up to depth while leaving those edges thin gives you a fraction of the benefit, so we work the perimeter properly and dress insulation right out towards the wall plate without blocking airflow. ### The hatch is part of the insulation line An insulated, draught-sealed hatch door completes the job. Insulating 30sqm of ceiling and leaving an uninsulated hatch in the middle of it is a gap you can feel from the landing. ## Loft Insulation: your questions answered How much does loft insulation cost?A full insulation top-up is included in our Ultimate package from £2,000 with 30sqm of raised boarding, hatch, ladder and LED lighting. How long does it take?Insulation top-ups are usually carried out as part of the same visit as boarding and access work. We confirm the timescale at survey. Can I board over insulation?Only with raised boarding. Boarding flat onto joists compresses the insulation and destroys much of its performance, which is why we fit LoftLegs at 175mm or 300mm. Do I need to remove the old insulation?Not usually. If it is dry and in reasonable condition we top up over it. Contaminated or damp material is removed and dealt with, and we tell you which applies at survey. Will more insulation make my loft damp?Not when ventilation is respected. A colder loft holds more moisture risk, so we keep the eaves gaps clear and the boarding raised to allow airflow. How long does loft insulation last?Undisturbed and uncompressed it performs for decades. The thing that shortens its life is being walked on and crushed, which raised boarding prevents. Will it cut my heating bills?Bringing a thin or crushed loft up to full, even depth reduces the heat lost through the roof, which is the largest single loss in most houses.
