We fit the LoftLeg system in 175mm or 300mm heights, screwed down to the joists, then board over the top with tongue-and-groove loft panels. The result is a level, load-spread deck you can walk on and stack boxes on without standing on plasterboard or crushing insulation. The height matters more than most people expect. Modern insulation depths sit well above the top of the joists, so boarding straight onto the timber flattens it and strips out a large part of its performance. Raising the deck keeps the full insulation depth intact and leaves an air gap so moisture can move rather than sit against the boards. This is what changes from job to job. ### LoftLeg 175mm vs 300mm The 175mm leg suits lofts where insulation sits at or just above joist level and head height is limited. The 300mm build-up is used where insulation has been topped up to current depths or where you want a deeper air gap. We measure existing insulation at survey and specify the height that keeps every millimetre of it uncompressed. ### Boards and fixings We use tongue-and-groove loft panels sized to pass through a standard hatch without being forced, screwed rather than nailed so a board can be lifted later if a cable or pipe ever needs attention. Edges are cut in around chimney breasts, purlins and truss webs instead of stopped short. ### Trussed roofs vs cut roofs Modern trussed roofs have thin, closely spaced members and a lot of diagonal bracing.
