Boarding laid directly onto quilt insulation can compress it. A raised platform keeps the storage surface separate from the insulation, helping it retain its intended depth and preserving airflow beneath the boards. The manufacturer's data sheet describes the 175mm version as designed to create a floor above 270mm of quilt insulation. The support height is measured above the timber it is fitted to, rather than from the ceiling below. Existing joist depth, insulation thickness and available headroom therefore all matter when selecting the right system. Loft Legs are made from recycled polypropylene and supplied in packs of 12. The data sheet sets a maximum distance between legs of 600mm. This is not a promise that every existing loft can carry that load: ceiling joists or trusses, their condition and the installation must all be suitable. Individual compression-test figures are not the permitted load for a boarded loft. A raised deck does not strengthen the underlying roof structure or make the area suitable for living accommodation. We check insulation depth, access and headroom to decide whether 175mm legs or the taller XL supports are appropriate. Insulation stays below the deck, with suitable clearance and airflow retained.
