Warm home. Useful loft.

## Storage Above Your Insulation, Not On It
A loft can provide valuable storage, but laying boards directly over quilt insulation can flatten the material beneath them. LoftLeg supports raise the deck above the insulation so you can keep a separate storage surface without sacrificing the depth of the insulation that helps keep heat in the rooms below.

The Little Loft Company supplies and fits the LoftLeg range across Telford, Shrewsbury, Newport and Shropshire. We consider the insulation, supporting timber, hatch access and available roof height together, rather than treating boarding as a surface that can simply be laid anywhere.

The original Loft Leg raises boards by 175mm. Loft Leg XL provides a 300mm support for deeper insulation arrangements. The manufacturer's data sheets describe these as designed for boarding above 270mm and 400mm of quilt insulation respectively, depending on the depth of the timber beneath. The right choice depends on your actual loft, not just the support height.

- Keep quilt insulation uncompressed beneath a raised storage deck.
- Retain suitable airflow and ventilation below and around the boarding.
- Choose between 175mm and 300mm supports to suit the insulation and headroom.
- Combine boarding with suitable shelving, downlight protection and lighting.Explore Our Loft Boarding Service

## How a Raised Loft Deck Is Fitted
The manufacturer's instructions set out four main fitting stages for Loft Leg and Loft Leg XL. Before those stages begin, the proposed storage area, existing ceiling structure, insulation and ventilation need to be assessed. The guide states that the loading limit of the existing ceiling structure should be confirmed by a structural engineer.

- 01

### Prepare the Fixings
Screws are pre-loaded into the support's pilot holes or slots. The supplied guide lists No. 8 × 1¼-inch multipurpose screws (4 × 30mm) and chipboard or MDF panels at least 18mm thick.

- 02

### Position the Supports
Supports are set out to suit the panels and supporting timber. The spacing and edge support must follow the appropriate manufacturer instructions for the chosen product and board layout.

- 03

### Fit the Insulation
Quilt insulation is laid around the supports without being compressed. The guide notes that a small vertical slit can help the blanket fit around a leg. The insulation manufacturer's own recommendations also apply.

- 04

### Secure the Deck
The panels sit on the top platforms and are screwed through into the supports. The completed deck is for domestic loft storage only, with the manufacturer's do-not-overload warning retained.

The supplied fitting guide quotes a maximum recommended support spacing of 610mm, while the 2025 data sheets quote 600mm. This overview is not a setting-out specification: the applicable manufacturer guidance must be checked before fitting. The guide also requires additional 300mm support intervals on the first and last truss when XL supports are used with 2.4m × 0.6m sheets.

## Storage Only. Never Overload.
LoftLeg creates a raised storage platform, not a living-room floor. The fitting instructions state a maximum storage loading of 25kg per square metre and explain that ceiling joists or trusses are normally designed for light domestic storage. That figure must not be treated as proof that every existing loft can carry that load.

The fitter must ensure that the existing ceiling structure and the new storage deck can take the required loads. Raising the boards does not strengthen the ceiling joists or roof trusses, and individual support strength tests do not establish the safe capacity of the finished loft.

The instructions specify domestic use only, prohibit use in damp conditions and require the loft to be correctly ventilated. Raised boarding keeps the insulation separate from the deck, but it does not fix a leaking roof or remove the need to investigate existing dampness. Ventilation must remain adequate throughout the installation.

## A Range That Works Together
The supplied LoftLeg flyer shows how the six products serve different parts of the loft. Loft Leg and Loft Leg XL support the boarded floor. Loft Ledge adds shelves between compatible trusses, keeping suitable belongings above the insulation and away from the main walkway.

Loft Lid protects compatible recessed downlights so insulation can remain more continuous around the fittings. For illumination, Loft Light offers a battery-powered option, while the Loft Bulb provides a mains-powered 40W, 4,000-lumen LED with adjustable panels. These are different lighting options, not products that every loft automatically needs.

We help choose the combination that suits your storage needs and existing loft. Downlight compatibility and any changes to wiring or fittings require appropriate checks; electrical work is carried out by a qualified electrician. Each product page above explains its specifications and important limitations.
